The History Behind Santa Barbara’s Health & Wellness Culture

October 4th, 2024

In Santa Barbara, wellness isn’t just a trend – it’s a lifestyle. Step outside, and you’ll find runners, cyclists, surfers, and yogis enjoying our endless sunshine year round. The local food scene also values healthy living, with various restaurants and grocers focusing on clean eating, farm-to-table meals, and outdoor dining. Even in our homes, the properties and grounds now often serve as the centerpiece, designed with the understanding that people would rather spend time outdoors than inside. With our perfect weather and natural beauty, it’s no surprise that Santa Barbara has a history of being a global wellness hotspot.

WHERE HEALTHY LIVING COMES NATURALLY

Santa Barbara’s reputation as a health haven began in the late 19th century, long before it became the luxury destination we know today. Charles Nordhoff’s 1873 book, California: For Health, Pleasure, and Residence, had a pivotal role in promoting the area’s growing reputation as the ultimate health resort with a climate as a natural remedy for respiratory diseases. This drew affluent travelers from the East Coast to settle in the area, putting Santa Barbara and Montecito on the map.

At the same time, rumors of Santa Barbara’s natural healing powers spread as the construction of Stearns Wharf, in 1872 and the railroad in 1877 made the area more accessible to settlers, tourists, and those seeking rejuvenation.

As the local population steadily increased, the growing demand for medical infrastructure led to the opening of Cottage Hospital, which welcomed its first patients to a 25-bed facility in 1891. Following the Spanish Flu in the early 1900s, many visitors found refuge in the serene landscapes of Santa Barbara and Montecito, drawn by the Mediterranean climate and the reputed healing benefits of the region’s hot springs, particularly the famous pools just above Montecito.

THE RISE OF SANTA BARBARA’S WELLNESS INDUSTRY

In the 1850s, Wilbur Curtiss, a worn-out miner with health issues, stumbled upon the Montecito Hot Springs and experienced what today would be marketed as a full-body detox. Reportedly, after bathing in the springs, he was healed within six months. This testimonial aligned with the beliefs of many doctors at the time who claimed that the hot springs could treat a range of ailments, from rheumatism to digestive problems. Inspired by his personal experience, Curtiss envisioned what would become the first glimpse into Santa Barbara’s burgeoning wellness industry, deciding to transform the hot springs into a wellness retreat, starting with tents, then cottages, and eventually a hotel. However, his ambition was no match for the harsh realities of nature, and a lack of investors turned his dream of a thriving spa into a recurring challenge.

Today, if you hike to the hot springs, you can still see remnants of the resort, a reminder of the area’s deep-rooted connection to holistic healing. While modern wellness trends may come and go, the hot springs have maintained their allure — proof that some rituals of renewal do endure over time.

OUR LOCAL GUIDE TO THE MODERN ERA OF HEALTH & WELLNESS

After the Spanish flu of the early 1900s, Santa Barbara and Montecito attracted wealthy families from Chicago, Boston, and New York seeking wellness, a trend that feels strikingly relevant today. We’re currently experiencing a similar movement, where the quest for longevity and well-being is reshaping home design in modern ways. Think cold plunges, saunas, and steam showers — often seamlessly integrated into living spaces. Some homes even feature dedicated built out wellness hammams. With more and more healthcare professionals choosing to call Santa Barbara home, the data backing these wellness trends is compelling.

It’s evident that this focus on health isn’t a passing fad; it’s a lasting lifestyle shift that’s here to stay. As this industry continues to grow, you can find a variety of local treatments, from IV therapies to med spas.
