INTERIORS DESIGNED TO REFLECT A LIFE WELL-LIVED.

June 14th, 2024

Paul Fortune, an AD100 celebrity interior designer and distinguished arbiter of elegance, is remembered for his ability to create eclectic spaces that exude sophistication and warmth with deference to the past. Known for his impeccable taste, Fortune’s work was highly sought-after by a star-studded list of celebrities such as Aileen Getty, Richard Gere, and Sofia Coppola.

His successful career spanned over 35 years, beginning with his own 1920s Laurel Canyon home that garnered acclaim from the high-profile friends he regularly hosted during parties and gatherings. This propelled him into the design spotlight, leading to an impressive portfolio that included Marc Jacobs's Paris apartment and Greenwich Village townhouse, the renovation of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hoffman house, and a selection of premier residential properties across Los Angeles and Santa Barbara County.

From the private homes of his clients to iconic venues like Les Deux Café and the Sunset Tower Hotel, his legendary style was also responsible for putting the first vintage Cadillac through the roof of the Hard Rock Café. Fortune’s universally treasured flair for aesthetics resulted in a legacy of incredible projects, including the reimagining of this quintessential 1920s Spanish estate – 1586 San Leandro Lane.

A MASTERCLASS IN EXQUISITE LIVING

Past and present intertwine just beneath the Santa Ynez mountains, moments away from Miramar Beach, where mature oaks and lush landscaping envelop the driveway leading to the Hedgerow retreat. Its quiet, private location feels as if you were transported to a bygone era, yet it remains conveniently close to both the Upper and Lower Villages. Its white exterior is adorned with romantic vines and is centered around a stylish raised ledge pool with period details custom to the home.

Paul Fortune overhauled the interiors of the Sunset Tower Hotel, including the one shown above, in 2005. He also updated the Tower Bar, insisting on a new lighting design that, he writes, “flattering to all, became so renowned that it was even mentioned in a Vanity Fair editorial,” crediting it with the success of their annual Oscar party (photo by Tim Street-Porter). The main house includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms (3 full, 2 half), and a detached artist studio with a two-car garage. Soaring ceilings with exposed beams and wood floors frame thoughtful, considered interiors where Fortune’s touch is palpable in every corner.

Privately situated on the upper level, the primary bedroom basks in abundant natural light as it overlooks the treetops of whimsical mature oaks. It includes a large, custom walk-in closet, generously sized shower, and spa-like bath for ultimate luxury.

At the heart of the home is an open and airy gourmet kitchen designed with entertaining in mind. Featuring an expansive island, an enviable pizza oven, multiple wine coolers, and top-of-the line appliances, the space is truly brought to life by its direct backyard access. Large French doors open to views of the pool and a trellised patio for al fresco dining, perfect for hosting gatherings.
